Bariatric Revision Surgery

Bariatric revision surgery is a procedure that corrects or improves prior weight loss surgery.

Most of the time, bariatric surgery is successful—people lose weight and maintain a new, healthier lifestyle. However, in some cases, patients find that the procedure deteriorates over time or is no longer effective for a variety of reasons. Revision surgery can help.

Who Should Have Bariatric Revision Surgery?

If you have had weight loss surgery in the past but remain shy of your goals, or you are experiencing complications, we can provide you with options. We provide revision weight loss surgery for:

  • Weight gain after surgery
  • Ruptured or displaced gastric bands
  • Displaced gastric band ports
  • Enlarged gastric pouch
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
  • Problems swallowing

Bariatric Revision Tests

Our experts will discuss your surgical history with you. We may run diagnostic tests to make sure your revision surgery is the best and safest fit for your needs. Tests may include but are not limited to:

Endoscopy

A minimally invasive procedure using a thin, flexible scope through the mouth to evaluate your esophagus, stomach and the first part of your small intestine.

Upper GI

A special dye combined with X-rays is used to see how your digestive tract is working.

Bariatric Revision Surgery Options

Our skilled team provides minimally invasive revision surgeries of all types. You can expect procedures that use the latest technologies to help you recover faster. We offer several revision procedures, including:

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Revision

The original gastric pouch created during surgery may become larger over time.

  • Increase intestinal bypass
  • Decrease pouch and or stomach size
  • Distilizaton of Gastric Bypass
    • In gastric bypass distalization, the BP limb and central channel (CC) are lengthened, which can result in improved weight loss. This procedure is believed to reset the hormones needed to spur greater weight loss, helping gastric bypass patients resume their weight loss journey.

Gastric Sleeve Revision

We can correct gastric sleeve surgery by:

  • Converting the gastric sleeve to a duodenal switch or Sadi (S)
  • Recreating the gastric sleeve
  • Converting the gastric sleeve to a gastric bypass

Note we have a program called the Sleeve Enhancement Program. Click here to see our program.

Gastric Band Removal

We can remove the band causing problems and convert it to another bariatric procedure like sleeve gastrectomy. Note we no longer perform gastric band surgeries.

After Bariatric Revision Surgery

We help you meet your goals and reverse the outcome or negative effects of your previous weight loss procedure. After your revision surgery, we develop a customized diet and exercise plan to help you stay on track. Our team provides you with all the information and support you need to remain healthy.
