Boosting Zzzs after Bariatric SurgeryStart benefiting from better health after bariatric surgery in Salt Lake City by improving your sleep habits.

Everyone is guilty of it. The late nights, the early mornings, the midnight snacks—there are some habits that drastically interfere with your ability to get a great night’s sleep, yet we regularly find ourselves falling subject to the same unhealthy routines. After bariatric surgery in Salt Lake City, it is time to address these poor habits and make strides to improve your health inside and out.

Missing out on sleep can interfere with your health in a wide variety of ways. It can lead to migraine headaches, increase your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer, and make you more susceptible to conditions like diabetes, anxiety and depression.

But there is one more condition that can be spurred on by sleep—one many people struggle with and don’t associate with a lack of shuteye. You guessed it: obesity.

Losing sleep decreases your energy levels the following day, making it more likely that you are going to overeat in an attempt to wake up. What’s more, when you miss out on sleep you are more likely to turn to caffeine to boost your energy levels, and that caffeine will in turn affect your ability to sleep well the next night. The result is generally a spiral of restless nights with missed sleep that can never be made up.

It is time to break the cycle. Here are a few tips to improve your sleeping habits starting tonight:

  • Create a bedtime. There is a reason we train children to go to sleep at certain times. You aren’t always going to feel tired when it is the ideal time to go to bed. However, if you create a set time to start winding down and turn off all electronic distractions, you may begin to experience better quality sleep every night.
  • Create a sleep sanctuary. Sure, sitting in bed and watching TV is relaxing, but it isn’t the type of relaxing activity that is going to help you sleep. You need to clear your brain of distractions, and that means creating a space that is tailored towards sleep. Your bedroom should be comfortable, airy and most importantly dark. If you have pets that often wake you up at night consider keeping them in another room so you can sleep better.
  • Develop healthier habits. Smoking, drinking caffeine late in the day and eating right before bed will all interfere with your ability to sleep and stay asleep. Napping might seem like it is great for your sleeping habits, as it generally means getting more sleep, but napping could be interfering with your ability to sleep well at night. If exercising before bed wakes you up, try switching your workout routine to the morning.
