Skin Removal Surgery
Bariatric Medicine Skin Removal Surgery
Over the years Dr. Cottam has learned the skill of skin removal surgery because of the number of bariatric patients that request it following their weight loss surgery. Dr. Daniel Cottam provides this surgery for half the price of plastic surgeons in our surgical center.
We offer the following skin removal services:
The most common surgery is Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty):
What is a Tummy Tuck?
A Tummy Tuck is a procedure that removes excess fat and skin while restoring weakened or separated muscles.
Types of Tummy Tucks:
- Mini Tummy Tuck: Small, lower abdominal focus.
- Full Tummy Tuck: Comprehensive abdomen (above and below navel).
- Extended Tummy Tuck: Addresses abdomen, hips, and lower back/apron.
We also offer other types of skin removal as listed below:
Post-Weight Loss Skin Removal:
- What is Skin Removal Surgery? Contouring procedures for arms, legs, torso, and buttocks.
- Panniculectomy vs. Tummy Tuck: Clarify that a panniculectomy removes the "apron" of skin (often covered by insurance) while a tummy tuck includes muscle repair for aesthetic contouring. Note insurance will only cover if there is a medically necessary reason to remove the skin such as a rash that will not go away. Without proof of a medical problem associated with hanging skin insurance will not cover the procedure. This often requires pictures to send to insurance.
- When to Consider Surgery: Waiting at least a year after bariatric surgery or weight stabilization.
- Combined Procedures: Combining tummy tucks with thigh lifts or arm lifts for full body transformation.
Recovery and Safety
- Initial Recovery (1–2 Weeks): Expectation of moderate pain, restricted movement (slightly bent posture), drains, and compression garments.
- Long-Term Recovery (6–8+ Weeks): Return to daily activities and gradual resumption of exercise.
- Pre-Op Checklist: Stop smoking, avoid specific supplements, plan for help at home.
- Risks: Seroma, scarring, bleeding, and asymmetry.
